Karnataka: Three killed in rain related incidents

Udupi/Kalaburagi: Rain-related incidents claimed three lives in the Coastal and North Karnataka districts. A 12-year-old girl- Rachana was washed away in a stream near her house. The incident occurred on Sunday when the girl accidentally fell into the swelling waters.

In another incident, on Monday, Gokuldas Prabhu (53) of Halladi Harkadi village in Kundapur taluk fell into a stream and died.

Basamma Basavaraj (35) of Jewargi in Kalaburagi district was killed when her house collapsed on Monday.

As the IMD issued a red alert for Coastal Karnataka districts till Tuesday morning, Udupi and Uttara Kannada district administrations announced a holiday for educational institutions on Tuesday. The Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada has also declared a holiday for Undergraduate Colleges.

In Dakshina Kannada district, 18 houses have been partially damaged, and one severely affected. In Udupi district, nearly 50 houses and two cattle sheds have been damaged. Four families have been relocated to a temporary rehabilitation center at Yenagudde.

In Uttara Kannada district, one house has been completely destroyed, while 24 others suffered partial damage. About 164 people have shifted to the nine temporary rehabilitation centers set up by the authorities.

Deputy Commissioner of Gadag district, Vaishali ML, has urged those residing near riverbanks and streams to move to safer locations.

Officials have been directed to remain stationed at their respective headquarters.

Efforts are underway to identify families living in unsafe mud houses and to relocate them to safer areas.
