Kochi: Students Federation of India, Fraternity clash on office

The tensed situation was brought under control by the police which rushed to the spot after being alerted by the college principal.

KOCHI: A scuffle between activists of Students Federation of India (SFI) and Fraternity Movement, the student wing of Welfare Party, erupted on the Ernakulam Maharaja’s College campus on Wednesday afternoon over the opening of the college union office on the campus.

The tensed situation was brought under control by the police which rushed to the spot after being alerted by the college principal. In the scuffle, three activists from both sides claimed to have sustained injuries and got admitted to the hospital.

As the term of the union had expired, the college authorities had locked the union office in the campus on Tuesday. College authorities said that the decision was taken at an all party meeting.

However, the lock of the union office was found broken. The college authorities had lodged a complaint at the Central police in this regard.

Police said the clash started when the activists of the Fraternity Movement staged a protest saying SFI activists opened the office unathorisedly.

SFI claimed the office was opened for its activists including the work on college magazine. They alleged the activists of Fraternity Movement barged inside with provocative slogans and manhandled the students inside the union office.

The Fraternity Movement claimed it was SFI activists who attacked their activists without provocation. They also claimed they had staged protest after lodging a complaint with the principal.
