The woman had delivered a girl child at the Petlaburj Government Maternity Hospital on July 20.

When the health officers went to JJ Hospital, the doctors there stated that they had only an ultrasound unit and a delivery centre and no specialised in-vitro fertilisation facilities. The health officials noted down the details and said they would investigate whether any other hospital or fertiliticy clinic located in the city was involved.

A senior officer of the department explained, “We are going to look at the other centres in the city and find out where this transplantation occurred.” The surrogate mother handed over documents such as scan reports and medical papers to the officers. She, however, did not have a contract agreement. She stated that she had come to Hyderabad with her husband in search of work. Due to constant quarrels with her husband, she began working at a chocolate factory in Hayatnagar and started living in the area by herself. At the factory, she met a woman, whom she identified as Radha, who took her to a fertility centre and promised '3 lakh for a surrogacy if the pregnancy and childbirth were successful. Radha was with her throughout the pregnancy, the surrogate mother claimed.

During the ultrasound scan in the eighth month, the surrogate mother alleged, the commissioning parents came to know that she was carrying a girl child and refused to take the baby.

The surrogate mother claimed that she was left on her own and sought the help of her husband and factory co-workers.

Radha co-ordinated with an agent from Guntur for the deal, she said. But Radha and the agent are absconding and their phones are switched off. The surrogate mother has not lodged a police complaint so far.
