Will complete Loan waiver by July: Kashempur

The government has decided to clear the loan waiver of 18 lakh farmers by July 18.

Bengaluru: The state government has set a deadline of July 10 for officials to complete the loan waiver process of over 18 lakh farmers, who availed loans from cooperative banks.

Speaking to reporters after meeting Apex bank chairpersons and presidents of district credit co-operative banks, Cooperation Minister Bandeppa Kashempur said that of the 19 lakh applicants, about 18 lakh were found eligible for the waiver scheme.

The government has decided to clear the loan waiver of 18 lakh farmers by July 18.

Government officials will personally visit the homes of one lakh farmers, whose supporting documents were not found with the waiver applications.

The decision on including them in the waiver scheme will be taken after the visit, Mr Kashempur said.

The biggest problem the officials are facing is the non-linking of Aadhaar cards with the BPL cards of farmers.

The government wants to sort out the problem faced by farmers at their doorsteps.

At present, about 22 lakh farmers come under the purview of cooperative sector banks and institutions. The government wants to bring another 10 lakh farmers under the cooperative sector, so that they can avail loans at zero per cent interest.

For this, the cooperative sector needs over Rs 3,000 crore and the department is in the process of mobilising resources, the minister added.
