Thiruvannamalai: Villagers pull down new Anganwadi with bare hands

MLA Panneerselvam blamed the poor quality of the construction job on his contractor and promised that “stern action” would be taken against him.

Thiruvannamalai: In a major embarrassment to the government, a group of youngsters in Kidampalayam of Kalasapakkam in Tiruvannamalai district on Monday demolished with their bare hands and legs the walls of an anganwadi for children being built at a cost of Rs 8.5 lakh from the local MLA’s development fund.

Kalasapakkam’s legislator Panneerselvam (AIADMK) was informed of the substandard construction and he rushed there with a JCB machine to remove the structure and put up a stronger structure for the children’s care. However, by the time the JCB arrived, the local youth brought down the entire structure merely using their hands and legs, just to demonstrate how weak the entire construction work had been done.

“This work had been entrusted to a contractor who used cement mix of 1:10 ratio; that is mixing ten parts of sand to one part of cement. Besides, substandard sand had been used. Just imagine what would have happened to our children if the entire structure had been completed in this horrible manner and structure came down on the little kids”, said a local youth Anandan, after completing the ‘demolition’ job with his bare hands.

MLA Panneerselvam blamed the poor quality of the construction job on his contractor and promised that “stern action” would be taken against him. It turned out that the contractor who took the job from the ruling party MLA had sub-contracted it another contractor.
