Corporates pitch in to set up STP at Mahadevapura Lake
Bengaluru: In a unique initiative, corporates have come together to partner with the United Way Bengaluru (UWBe), BBMP and Citizen’s Group to construct an eco-friendly 1 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant at Mahadevapura Lake in the city.
Supported by Amazon, Mphasis, Dell Technologies, HTC Global and BORDA, the effort is aimed at rejuvenating the lake, which adjoins their offices at Bagmane World Technology Centre. The STP will treat 1 MLD of wastewater flowing in an adjoining drain and discharge it into the lake every day.
Dr Meenu Bhambhani, vice-president and head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Mphasis, said, “The BBMP is the Project Owner and United Way of Bengaluru is the project coordinator, CSR partner. CDD Dewats is the Technical Consultant for this project.”
Dr Bhambhani said, “In 2016, in an effort to rejuvenate the Mahadevapura Lake, the BBMP built necessary hydraulic structures (diversion channels) to divert wastewater from entering the lake. To take these efforts further, United Way of Bangalore (UWBe), an NGO working on ‘Wake the Lake’ campaign for the last 9 years, was roped in as a CSR partner, and along with Mphasis, brought together other tech firms, like Amazon and Dell, to fund the STP.”
UWBe worked closely with the BBMP and state government for the approvals required to set up the STP at the lake.
“It makes us happy that we have the support of civil society and corporates and they are doing so much to make our city clean and green,” said R.L. Parameshwaraiah, Chief Engineer, Lakes, BBMP. The total cost of the project is Rs 2.5 crore.
