Chennai: A 19-year-old girl riding pillion died after she was thrown off a two-wheeler. The incident occurred in Mamallapuram on East Coast Road when the rider of the bike spotted a cow and tried to avoid hitting it. Kokila (19) a resident of Pallikaranai and an engineering student at a private college in the city was riding pillion during the incident on Sunday night. She sustained head injuries and died in the early hours of Monday at the Rajiv Gandhi Government general hospital.
Her friend, the bike rider, also fell from the bike but escaped with minor injuries. The duo went to Mamallapuram on Sunday and when they were returning to the city, the accident happened.
Reportedly, the biker spotted a cow when they reached Pattipulam on East Coast Road. When he suddenly swerved to avoid hitting it, he lost control of the bike. Kokila was severely injured, rushed to a private hospital in Kelambakkam and later shifted to another hospital but did not survive. Mamallapuram police have registered a case and are investigating.
In another accident in the city in the city, a 21-year-old man lost his life after a speeding lorry rammed his vehicle and ran over him at Koyambedu on Monday morning.
The lorry driver fled the spot following the incident. According to police, Lingathurai (21), a resident of Mogappiar and in the dairy business, was riding on a two-wheeler with cans of milk. He was going to Velappanchavadi when a lorry hit his vehicle from the rear. Lingathurai was thrown onto the road and the rear wheel of the lorry ran over him, killing him instantly.
His body was sent to the Kilpauk government hospital for postmortem and Koyambedu police are investigating the case....
