Mariyam, son left as virus claims rest

In less than a month the three had bowed to the might of Nipah. Moosa died at Baby Memorial Hospital in the wee hours of Thursday.

Kozhikode: With only one son left to look after her, Mariyam, wife of Valachuketty Moosa, 60, of Sooppikkada, is mourning the death of her husband and two sons.

In less than a month the three had bowed to the might of Nipah. Moosa died at Baby Memorial Hospital in the wee hours of Thursday.

The elder son Muhammed Salim was killed in an accident in 2013. Now in the second stroke of destiny, Mariyam lost Sabith and Salih.

Sabith, 23, an electrician, was the first victim of Nipah virus in the state. He died on May 5.

Salih, a civil engineer, died on May 18.

Along with them, Nipah took the life of Mariyam, wife of Moidu, Moosa’s brother, on May 19.

Now, the youngest son, Mohammed Muthalib, 22, a college student, is her lone hope.

But she is very much scared that the deadly virus might try to take him off too.

Though Asifa, the fiancée of Salih, had admitted to a hospital with symptoms, she tested negative for the killer virus.

It all started after cleaning their well last month. Sabith and Salih had entered the well to clean it before the monsoon.

A den of bats, both might have contracted Nipah during the process, believes health workers who had later found bats, both dead and alive in the well.
