Karnataka: Breadwinner lost, Mayor offers Rs 10 lakh
Bengaluru: While Bengaluru Mayor Ms Padmavathi on Wednesday announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of Shanthakumar, who got washed away in a storm water drain on Saturday night, his family is yet to come to terms with the tragedy.
His family is still hoping that he may come back, said Basavaraj, Shanthakumar's uncle.
He said that Shantakumar was the sole breadwinner of the family of five and they now face an uncertain future. Shanthakumar was married to Saraswati and they have two children aged 3 years and 9 months. They were staying in Chigarapalli main road.
The tragedy has washed away the dreams and desires of his family and the BBMP intends on compensating it with mere Rs 10 lakh, his uncle lamented.
“We are determined to find his body to conduct last rites as per Hindu tradition, rather than expect compensation,” Basavaraj said.
Shantakumar’s body still missing
After four days of intensive search involving over 380 men from National Disaster Relief Force, Karnataka State Fire and Emergency services personnel, State Disaster Rescue Force, Fire and Emergencies Department and BBMP to fish out the body of Shanthakumar, the operation was called off on Wednesday.
There was little hope that his body will be fished out after the search operation was intensified in stormwater drain near Kambipura, after a citizen informed BBMP that he saw a body floating there. Search operation, which went up to 48 km stretch of stormwater drain with the help of 20 earth movers could not trace the body.
After the search operation called off, city Mayor G. Padmavathi affirmed that such incidents would not recur and steps will be taken to regularly clean all stormwater drains.
