Parties told polls over

Civic body wants poll materials removed immediately.

Kochi: As the elections are over, removing campaign materials is a tough challenge for the civic bodies. The local body authorities, including Kochi Corporation has issued notice to political parties to remove campaign materials including bill boards, hoardings and banners immediately.

Though the political parties have announced a ‘clean and green’ poll campaign this time, such promises were not fulfilled as many constituencies in the district are flooded with hundreds of hoardings and banners.

Mayor Soumini Jain said that the Corporation’s special squads started removing illegal bill boards and poll campaign materials like flags and banners from different parts of the city. The CPM district leadership said that the drive to clear campaign materials from different parts of the constituency will begin on Thursday.

“The party workers have been asked to clear all materials like banners, hoardings and stickers and to wind up the drive at the earliest,” said party sources.

Meanwhile, Hibi Eden MLA, UDF candidate in Ernakulam constituency told DC that V.D Satheesan MLA, general convener of election campaign committee has instructed party workers to launch an intensive drive to clear all publicity materials immediately. “Compared to earlier elections, use of plastic for billboards was less this time. More than 80 per cent of the publicity materials are eco-friendly,” said V.D. Satheesan.

BJP district president N.K. Mohandas said that party workers have been instructed to remove publicity materials soon. “Compared to other political parties, the BJP has used very few number of billboards. All those materials will be removed in two days,” he said.

Since, the High Court has banned use of flex boards, the political parties shifted to banners and billboards made of cloth and paper, which turned to be a big respite for civic bodies.
