Sore eyes back due to erratic weather in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: Erratic weather that shifts between stifling heat and thunderstorms, coupled with pollution, have led to an increase in allergic conjunctivitis in the city, affecting both children and adults.
Dr Ravindra Goud, superintendent of Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, explained, “This year the extreme weather conditions have started as early as March and as a result of this there has been an increase in the number of conjunctivitis cases in the city.”
Allergic conjunctivitis leads to an inflammation in the eyes which causes pain, redness, itchiness, gritty feeling and also constant tearing up. It is highly contagious and hence the affected person has to follow a proper hand washing regime. The medication for conjunctivitis is eye drops and use of dark glasses or staying away from direct sunlight.
Dr Manoj C. Mathur, senior ophthalmologist explained, “Due to the reduced moisture content in the atmosphere the eyes become very dry. People must splash cold water on their faces frequently during the summer months in order to keep the eyes hydrated. Women who share their eye make-up often get these infections. Ensure to keep your eyes clean and to wash your hands properly if you indulge in outdoor activities.”
