Chennai: In a proud moment for the University of Madras, President Ram Nath Kovind has consented to be the chief guest for its 160th convocation and the university is gearing up for the special convocation scheduled to be held on May 5.

The convocation will be held between 10.30 am and 11.30 am. "The university is currently celebrating its 160th year with seminars and conferences. We are planning to invite Governor, Chief Minister and vice-chancellors of all the state universities for the special 160th convocation," said P. Duraisamy, vice-chancellor, University of Madras.

“The President is likely to hand over the endowment medals, gold medals, prizes for the winners of 160th-year logo competition. He will also deliver the convocation address,” he said.

All PhD scholars and gold medal winners used to receive the degrees from the chief guest at the convocation. Since the function is conducted for just one hour, it may not be possible for the President to hand over the degree certificates to all the toppers. Around 700 PhD scholars and thousands of students expected to receive their degrees at the convocation.

The university has also formed various committees to conduct the convocation in a grand manner. “We have formed committees with syndicate members, teaching and non-teaching staff to organise this mega event,” Mr Duraisamy said.

Former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had laid the foundation stone for centenary auditorium and centenary building during the 100th year celebrations.

Then President Zail Singh was the chief guest for the 125th year celebrations.
APJ Abdul Kalam has inaugurated 150th-year celebrations. For the 150th year's convocation, then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi participated. From September 2017 the university is conducting various events including seminars, conferences to mark the 160th year.

The university is also planning a grand valedictory function for 160th-year celebrations in coming September.
