Osmania University road gets laid with new technology
Hyderabad: The road between the NCC gate and OU Police Station has been given a makeover, thanks to Osmania University’s centenary celebrations. The GHMC had sanctioned Rs 1.8 crore for re-carpeting and repair of the road; and workers took three days to lay the 2.4 km stretch. It is the first rubber road in the city. Crumb Rubber Modified Bitumen (CRMB) has been used to lay the road.
The CRMB road mix contains bitumen, and 15 percent of it is rubber. It is suitable for pavements that are subjected to all sorts of weather conditions, highways, roads with dense traffic, junctions, sea port roads, as well as roads with a large number of heavy duty vehicles.
Mr Mohan Singh, the Superintendent Engineer, says, “This is a new technology, being used for the first time in the city. Earlier, the city had a few stretches of bitumen mixed with plastic. However this is the first stretch that will use CRMB. Its crushing strength is high, and the life of the road will be around 5 years. This road mixture is 15 per cent rubber, which will help it withstand water, as it won’t allow water to percolate.”
Advantages of CRMB road
- Lower susceptibility to daily and seasonal temperature variations.
- Higher resistance to deformation at elevated pavement temperatures.
- Better adhesion between aggression and binder.
- Prevention of cracking and reflective cracking.
- Improved performance under heavy traffic conditions.
