Chennai: Lady dentist hangs herself in clinic
Chennai: A 27-year-old dentist was found dead in her clinic by a patient at Kelambakkam on Saturday night. The deceased, identified as S. Sushmitha (27) of Puducherry, has been living in Sai Baba Koil street, Kelambakkam, for over a year running a clinic and working in a private medical college hospital in Nellikuppam.
On Saturday, a patient walked into her clinic around 7.30 pm and waited for his turn for about 30 minutes thinking that the doctor was busy. Sensing that something was amiss, he repeatedly knocked on her cabin but to no avail. He barged into the cabin to find her hanging from the ceiling fan using a nylon rope.
Kelambakkam Police moved the body to Chengelpet Government Hospital for a post-mortem and informed her parents about the death. Police said the deceased would visit her parents over the weekend, and her parents would drop by if she gets too busy with her work.
The woman was also in a relationship with a man who is working in a luxury hotel in the neighbourhood where the former would used to frequently eat out. The relationship grew over time and the youth would also visit her in the clinic during his spare time. She had contacted the youth over the mobile phone many times.
“Apparently, there was a misunderstanding between them and that may have prompted the doctor to commit suicide,” said an investigating officer.
“Of late, Sushmitha had been reportedly confiding with the youth about her mounting debts and her inability to meet the repayment schedule. This could also have had a bearing to the drastic step she took,” the official added.
Since the cops were busy attending to the electioneering bandobust, the response time went for a toss and the neighbours lowered the woman’s body hoping to revive her if she wasn’t dead yet.
The body was handed over to the family on Sunday and was taken to Puducherry for the last rites. The preliminary post-mortem report, which was furnished on Sunday, ruled out any foul-play in the death.
