Kunjipally Uroos fest under green protocol

Kozhikode: The famed festival of Makham Uroos at Kunjipally mosque at Azhiyur is being held under the green protocol. Thousands of people, including those from neighbouring districts, attend the 10-day Uroos that began on March 22.

On the final day, 8,000 kg of biriyani rice will be cooked for the devotees. "This time, instead of disposable plates and glasses, plantain leaf and steel glass will be given. Plantain leaf will be enclosed in the food kit," said K. Anvar Haji, treasurer of the mosque committee.

The mosque falls in Azhiyur grama panchayat which has been selected as the model local self-government institution in food and safety in Vatakara Assembly constituency. According to the new food and safety guidelines, religious institutions should also adhere to the green protocol if food is served. Kunjipally Uroos is a major event where thousands of people take part every year," said grama panchayat secretary T. Shahul Hameed.

The mosque committee has taken FSSAI licence for Uroos. Food and safety officer, Vadakara circle, Dr. Jithinraj P. said that the protocol considerst the ecological aspects also. "Normally, large crowds gathering for fests would leave behind heaps of plastic waste. The green protocol prevents that also," he said.
