Alappuzha: DIG visits Mavelikara jail after inmate’s death
Alappuzha: Things are in a bad shape in Mavelikara sub-jail where an accused was found dead on Thursday morning.
M.J. Jacob, 68, Madathil, Kumarakom, Kottayam district, was taken to the jail on Wednesday night after he was remanded in a cheating case registered by Thiruvalla police. He was found dead at 5 a.m. on Thursday with a handkerchief stuck in his throat.
Jacob was put up in cell number 14 along with other inmates.
According to the preliminary report, Jacob committed suicide by swallowing the handkerchief. The post-mortem report said that he died due to the cloth stuck in the gullet. The jail officials have been accused of negligence.
A. Santhosh Kumar, Jail DIG (south range), visited the sub-jail on Sunday to investigate the complaints over lack of facilities and negligence of officials.
He took the statement of the jail authorities on the incident and the condition of the jail as part of a departmental investigation.
The statements of officials and the inmates who stayed with Jacob were recorded by the district police chief on Saturday.
The sub-jail has a history of mistreating inmates. A month ago, an inmate who jumped jail and was caught said that he was mistreated by jail authorities.
