Roopa Moudgil's no to quasi-political' NBF award

She, however, congratulated NBF for their citizen-centric work and said that she will support all citizen-centric or social work.

BENGALURU: Inspector General of Police (Home Guard and Civil Defence, Bengaluru) D. Roopa Moudgil has refused to take part in an award ceremony by the Namma Bengaluru Foundation, an NGO funded by BJP Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Chandrasekhar, saying it carried a “heavy cash reward” and that she wanted to maintain “equi-distance from quasi-political bodies and associates”.

Ms Roopa was nominated for the Government Official of the Year category. Eight government officers, including Roopa, have been shortlisted for the award and the winner will be announced at an event in Bengaluru.

In a letter to Namma Bengaluru Foundation Chairman Sridhar Pabbisetty on Saturday, a day before the award ceremony, Ms Roopa thanked NBF for recognising her efforts, but said that she can’t accept the award as it also has a high cash reward and her conscience does not permit her to accept the award.

She wrote, “Every government servant is expected to maintain neutrality and equi-distance from all quasi-political bodies and associations that have even the bare minimum political overtone. Only then a public servant can maintain a clean and fair image in the eyes of the public. It becomes all the more relevant now in the view of the ensuing elections.”

She, however, congratulated NBF for their citizen-centric work and said that she will support all citizen-centric or social work. Namma Bengaluru Awards are annual awards given to multiple personalities across categories by the foundation. This is the ninth edition of the awards.
