Kozhikode: Save a water body project at schools

1,119 schools in district to participate.

KOZHIKODE: Students’ Army for Vivid Environment (SAVE), the green initiative at schools in the district has come up with a project to rejuvenate water bodies in and around each school. Each school should select a dying water body - well, river or rivulet - and rejuvenate it through participatory efforts during April, May months. “There are 1,119 schools in the district up to high school level in government/aided sector. A school rejuvenating a water body means 1,119 water bodies would get a new lease of life which would become a major achievement,” says Vadayakkandy Naraya-nan, SAVE district coordinator and teacher.

The project has been named as ‘Jeevajalam’ and the inauguration will be held at Zamorin’s Higher Secondary School at Tali here on April 11. The rejuvenation work will be held under the aegis of a public committee which consists of local MLA, PTA members, green activists, staff and students. The committee will also look after the conservation aspect of the water body after rejuvenation.

“If there is no water body around an urban school, they can find one in any area. It’s not a students’ work alone. The entire people of the local area should join hands for the ecology and to combat drought,” urges Mr Narayanan. Writer V.R. Sudheesh will inaugurate the event at Tali School. The abandoned pond in the school premises should be revived under ‘Jeeva-jalam’ from April 9.
