Experts talk on fake news at National Institute of Technology-Calicut
KOZHIKODE: The day two of the literary fest I-INK saw panel discussion take place on the fake news phenomena. Various aspects of the same were discussed including how fake news exists, its impact on our society as it manufactures erroneous opinions and how it’s turning India into a post-truth society The panel was chaired by experts in journalism. The panelists included Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, a journalist, political commentator, author and a documentary filmmaker, Geeta Seshu, media reporter and analyst, who is currently the consulting editor of The Hoot.
Other panelists included Jency Jacob, Managing Director at Boom, a fact-checking website who is also the co-host of the weekly fact-check show Fact vs. Fiction and K.J. Jacob, the moderator for this discussion, senior journalist and the executive editor of the Deccan Chronicle. Thakurta, spoke about the role of internet in the proliferation of fake news and also cited a few examples. This was followed by Jency Jacob giving further insights about misinformation and disinformation.
Trendsetting cellist Alison Gabrielle performed a few Bollywood numbers during the day. Los Angeles based HHI (Hip Hop International), famed for producing multiple live and televised street dance competitions throughout the world, came to NIT Calicut on the second day Ragam - the cultural fest. A dance workshop was also organized as part of the fest.
