University of Hyderabad students protest restrictions

The students demanded that it be taken back with immediate effect or they would intensify their protest against the varsity administration.

Hyderabad: Over 200 students from the University of Hyderabad on Friday set fire to a circular issued by the varsity administration saying that it restricts their freedom of expression and their right to protest inside the campus, at any place of their choice.

While burning the circular, the students demanded that it be taken back with immediate effect or they would intensify their protest against the varsity administration.

UoH students union president Kuldeep Nagi said, “The recent circular issued by the UoH admin restricting freedom of expression and the culture of protest inside the campus is atrocious and against UGC’s basic entitlement to students in any campus in India.”

He added: “We will fight against any rule or law that is anti-student and stops them from demanding their right.”

Meanwhile, UoH spokesperson Vipin Srivastava said, “It was decided some time back that no protest shall take place within 200 metres of any academic block. There are two places allotted in the campus for protests. We have to impose discipline in the campus so taking back the circular is not possible.”
