Sullying Epic: Hindu outfit files 2nd case against Kamal Haasan
KUMBAKONAM: In another disturbing development, a petition has been filed against film actor Kamal Haasan at the second additional Munsif court at Kumbakonam on Friday praying for action against him (Kamalhaasan) as he had spoken against the great epic ‘Mahabharata’ in an interview to a private television channel recently. In the petition, Bala (38), Thanjavur district secretary of Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) said that he respected great epics like ‘Mahabharata and Ramayana’ and he wanted to live as per the teachings in them. “I worship the two epics,” he said.
But Kamalhaasan, film actor, in the interview to a private television channel on March 12 has ‘denigrated’ Mahabratha when he answered a question on increasing violence against women, saying that these kinds of incidents are common in a state where ‘Mahabharata’ in which a woman was used as a pawn in gaming, is being read by people. Bala also said in the petition, “Kamalhaasan has been projecting himself as an atheist and was speaking against Hindu gods and now epics. He has a right to believe what he believes in. But he should not hurt the feelings of others”
Bala prayed the court to punish the actor under section 298 of IPC (punishment for uttering words etc with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of any person). The judge posted the petition for hearing on April 27 when it will be decided whether to accept it or not.
