Hyderabad: Garbage burnt at Neknapur irks locals
Hyderabad: Huge piles of garbage are collected near the Neknapur lake opposite Taramati Bardari and this was burnt at night on Wednesday, raising public anger.
Residents around the area who are attached to a non-government organisation (NGO) working to save the lake have protested over the garbage-burning near the lake.
Activist Madhulika Choudhary said, “Garbage from the surrounding areas is collected and dumped near the lake. This is being done with a view to filling the lake and facilitating encroachments. The total lake area is 150 acres. Under Miss-ion Kakatiya, a beautification work has been carried out. The municipal workers are still coming and dumping the household waste.”
Several complaints were made by the panchayat and also the collector to protect the lake from the garbage dumps but this is continuing. When several complaints were made to the collector’s office, the workers got into the act of burning the garbage. Meer Ali, a resident, explained, “Earlier they were burning this only in small quantities. Wednes-day night, they burnt down all the garbage they collected. There was a huge fire as also smoke at night.”
