Coimbatore: College tense after students clash

Warden of the government arts college roughed up.

COIMBATORE: Police strength was beefed up at Coimbatore government Arts College on Friday, following a group clash between students. A group of first year day scholars went to the college hostel near Racecourse on Thursday evening to meet their classmates. At the end of the day they decided to stay in the hostel with their friends. But the hostel warden refused them permission when a group of first year students met him in his room seeking his nod for their friends’ stay.

Another group of senior students intervened in the issue, supporting the warden. This led to a heated quarrel. After the seniors left the warden’s room, a few first year students abused the warden. Seniors, who came to know about this on Friday morning, went to the first year classes, searching for the students who abused the warden. A heated quarrel broke out between the two groups of students, which resulted in a clash.

Police said all the seniors joined hands and began to attack juniors inside the college campus on Friday. A police team led by DC S. Laxmi and AC Ramesh Krishnan entered the college campus, and stopped the fighting. College principal Jayalaxmi along with the college education joint director Parameshwari spoke to the students and pacified them. Police presence continues inside the college to avoid any untoward law and order incident.
