Airport safety, have we got it right?

Brussels blast might prove to be an eye-opener for security checks at airports in India and globally.

BENGALURU: In wake of the terror attack at the Brussels airport, doubts have clouded over the security arrangement at airports across the world.

The security measures taken at the country’s airports have come under the radar as the passengers here have an easy getaway inside the airport terminal without being checked. The security frisking and baggage checks happen much later.

While the Brussels blast might prove to be an eye-opener for security checks at airports in India and globally, is it time to change the security procedures at airports. Or can a Srinagar’s model ‘Concourse plan’ be an answer?

According to security experts, it is not the question of a certain model to be adapted across all the airports. One has to make the analysis of the threat perception and the preparedness of security authorities. K.R. Arkesh, a former top official of the CRPF, told Deccan Chronicle, “There are some airports in Europe and America where the entry is almost free for anybody till the arrival area or till the baggage belt. Whereas in India, only passengers have access to the terminal. Also, depending upon the threat perception one is dealing with, what kind of potential threat we may face, what kind of organisations can attack depending upon the analysis done and the defence preparedness one has to evolve a local model of security.”

Meanwhile, former DG & IGP R. Sri Kumar said that security procedure for any airport is a constant process. “It keeps on upgrading as it is a dynamic situation. There is no need to adapt any particular model in wake of what happened in Brussels. In India the security structure is entirely different as compared to western countries.”

Former DG & IGP S.T. Ramesh believes that the security measures at the Kempegowda International Airport is no different and other airport and they need to be revised even if it may cause inconvenience to the travellers.
