CPM is not CPM (Kerala): Sitaram Yechury

Party general secretary says it's time to adopt an intelligent, tactical approach.

THIRUVANANTHAPRUAM: A combative Sitaram Yechury on Saturday evening told the 500 plus delegates and observers at the state conference in Thrissur that CPI (M) is not CPM (Kerala) and "please read the party programme carefully" to get a proper understanding about the political tactical line. Mr Yechury was responding to the criticism against him that he was pursuing a pro-Congress line. During the general discussions on the report on Friday, DYFI national president P.A. Muhammad Riyaz and state president A.N. Shamsheer had alleged that Mr Yechury was advocating an understanding with the Congress.

However, the CPM general secretary put the record straight. He said both Mr Riyaz and Mr Shamsheer need to understand the party programme. There was no mention about having any alliance or understanding with the Congress. "The discussions didn't happen on what I said," he told the delegates.

Mr Yechury said the need of the hour was to adopt an intelligent, tactical approach and not to pick out differences between the statements of leaders. The criticism cannot be based on searching the statements in Google. These things are laid down in the party programme, he said taking dig at the DYFI leaders. The political situation in a particular state cannot determine the political tactical line for the entire country. The Congress may be party's direct enemy in Kerala but it is not the case in rest of the country. Political tactical line is adopted on the basis of the general situation prevailing in the country , he said.

Mr Yechury said the RSS-BJP is posing huge threat to the idea of India and even undermining the constitution, constitutional bodies and adopting fascist methods to polarize the country on religious lines. They are trying to turn this nation into Hindu Rasthra which needs to be stopped by all means.

It is in this backdrop that efforts should continue be to pool together all anti BJP-RSS votes to defeat them in the elections. The draft political resolution has clearly stated that such an approach should be adopted at the local level at the time of elections. Meanwhile, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said that no decision had been taken to include Kerala Congress leader K.M. Mani into LDF. The attempt is to utilize all oopporunity to weaken the opposition front.
