Trial run of pedestrian plaza in T Nagar today

Chennai: In a bid to decongest T Nagar and to try out the concept of pedestrian plaza, Chennai corporation will be trying out the new concept at Thyagaraya road on Saturday. A press release from the Ripon Buildings said that that as a part of the road will be converted into a pedestrian zone from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm.

Alternate traffic arrangements are planned on Thyagaraya Road from Bashyam road (Panagal Park) to Dr Nair Road. Eco-friendly battery operated cars will be operated within the pedestrian zone on both the sides of Thyagaraya road to take care of senior citizens, differently-abled, children and pregnant women for the short distance commutation within the pedestrian plaza zone.

Only MTC buses and two-wheelers will be allowed to ply on the stretch as usual. Cars, autos and other commercial vehicles will be restricted to ply during the said timings.

Similar diversions will also be in place at Thanikachalam Road and motorists can take a right turn at Venkata Naranayana Road and reach Bashyam Road (Panagal park), the release said.

In addition, to enhance interest among pedestrians/shopping commuters, some activities on health, drawing competition on smart city and recreational activities for children and appropriate street plays are planned.

The result of the survey will then be compiled and used to shape the final design of the proposed pedestrian plaza, the release said, adding that corporation commissioner D. Karthikeyan will inaugurate the trial at T Nagar on Saturday.
