Hyderabad: 24x7 water available in public taps

Households who have received less water supply or who have exhausted their supply can refill their cans at public stand posts free of cost.

Hyderabad: Public drinking water taps, also known as ‘public stand posts’, will now be made available for public use. A total of 5,013 of these taps will be opened for use in the core city areas from March and another 5,000 will come in the peripheral areas.

With this, households who have received less water supply or who have exhausted their supply can refill their cans at the public stand posts free of cost. Also, those who have no individual tap connections can make use of these taps, 24 hours a day.

All borewells in the city too are being repaired. HMWSSB chief M. Dana Kishore, said, “During summer, water consumption will rise and this is part of our summer action plan.”

Earlier, in February, the metro water board had announced its daily supply, especially in the core city area. But the scheme was put off due to the MLC election code. Presently 70,000 connections are being supplied with daily water, on a trial run.

The board currently supplies 387 million gallons of water a day to over 8.90 lakh connections on alternate days in Greater Hyderabad; and three to four days a week in peripheral circles.

Water is drawn from Akkampally (270 mgd) and Yellampally (172 mgd). The city no longer gets water from Osmansagar and Himayathsagar, although they have satisfactory water levels. The board currently supplies water on alternate days for an hour.
