Bengaluru: Brace for chaos, Nrupathunga Rd shut
Bengaluru: Roads close to Nrupathunga Road would witness chaos from Monday onwards as BBMP will be taking up white topping of the road, as per TenderSure specifications. Barring BMTC buses, other vehicles will not be allowed to ply on Nrupathunga Road and the work is expected to take at least one month.
With no other alternate road to divert the traffic, BBMP, traffic police and the horticulture department have jointly agreed to divert the traffic via Cubbon Park connecting the Hudson Circle.
While two-wheelers and light motor vehicles will be allowed to use the Cubbon Park road, provision will be made only for BMTC buses to ply on one side of Nrupathunga Road.Vehicles from K.R. Circle will be diverted into Cubbon Park via Century Club and a right turn to reach Hudson Circle. Currently the vehicles which ply from Hudson Circle into the Cubbon Park will be stopped.
BBMP commissioner Manjunath Prasad told Deccan Chronicle, "Nrupathunga Road will be closed for a period of one to one and half month for completion of works taken under TenderSURE project."When asked why it would take so long, Manjunath said, "We can even complete works in a matter of 15 days. But curing of white topping will take at least one month."
To reduce the traffic burden on Cubbon park, provisions will be made to allow only BMTC buses on Nrupathunga road. There is no clarity on whether the gates of Cubbon Park, which usually close at 10 pm everyday and open only at 6 am, would now remain open for an extended period.
However, Horticulture Department Director P.C. Ray said that they have recommended the Horticulture Ministry to keep Cubbon Park gates closed for vehicular movement between 10 pm and 6 am and on Sundays too.
