Thiruvananthapuram: Probe into Padmanabhaswamy temple pond renovation
Thiruvananthapuram: An all-party meeting held here on Wednesday to discuss the demolition of the Kalmandapam in the Padmatheertha pond decided to conduct an inquiry whether procedures were followed in the renovation process in the pond.
If procedures were not followed, the Supreme Court will be apprised of it. The complaint that the directive of the archaeological department was not followed in the renovation process would be looked into.
The meeting was convened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to discuss the allegation that the Kalmandapam was demolished for renovation without following the norms.
The work of the Kalamandapam in the pond in the eastern side of the Padmanabhaswamy temple has been stopped until further notice following protest by local residents and royal family members Aswathi Thirunal Gowri Lakshmi Bayi and Adithya Varma. However, the cleaning of the pond would continue.
The Kalmandapam was demolished as part of the renovation of Padmatheertham pond which included fixing and beautifying the stone steps surrounding the pond, repairing the cloak room and renovation of stone platforms.
The meeting of the Supreme Court- appointed expert committee headed by Mr M.V. Nair would meet on Thursday and discuss the issue.
The works relating to the renovation of Kalmandapams will be based on the recommendations of the committee. Mr Aditya Varma will also be invited as the representative of the royal family to the meeting.
Dewaswom Minister V.S. Sivakumar and Cultural Minister K.C. Joseph also attended the meeting.
