Emotional CM Oommen Chandy denies role in palm oil deal
Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, facing a barrage of allegations from the Opposition, turned emotional on the concluding day of the 13th state Assembly sitting on Wednesday and said he had a clean public record. “There is not even 0.1 percent truth in the allegations being raised by the Opposition against me,” he said in his address.
“Had there been at least 0.1 percent truth in the allegations, I would have no moral right to be in public life. It is my firm belief that I have not done anything wrong. I have got strong backing from the Congress and the UDF,” he said.
“Now it is for the people to decide,” he added. Earlier, while replying to an adjournment notice by the Opposition on the Vigilance Court remarks in the palmolein case, the Chief Minister reiterated his earlier stand that the state exchequer had not suffered any monetary loss in the deal but only had a profit of Rs 9 crore.
“Even the Supreme Court had rejected the pleas against me. I also welcome the Vigilance Court order to discharge the officials involved in the case.
It vindicates my earlier decision to withdraw the case,” said Mr. Chandy.
In his concluding address, Mr. Chandy accused the Opposition of disrupting the House raising “flimsy issues.” “Of the 237 days of sitting of the current Assembly, adjournment motion notices were not considered only on seven days. The Opposition remained intolerant by raising allegations against the government and disrupting the government’s reply. Though the last session was scheduled to be held for 14 days, the House remained undisrupted on the days on which obituary reference of Congress leader A. C. Jose and poet O. N. V. Kurup were considered,” Mr. Chandy said.
