Bengaluru: Weak structure tilts, 3 families evacuated
Bengaluru: Members of three families living in a building at R.T. Nagar were evacuated as the structure tilted, thereby putting theirs and their neighbours lives at risk.
The city has seen several such instances of buildings tilting, and in most cases it is due to poor construction and violation of BBMP building bye-laws.
When a similar kind of incident took place in August last year, the then Mayor, Sampath Raj, had stated that chief engineers will take up audit of the old buildings in the city. But after his term ended, it was not taken up by his successors. “Old buildings in the city need attention. Out of greed, many building owners have built extra floors to rent it out. They do not care to check on the strength of the building nor take up repairs,” said Murali, a resident of Chamrajpet.
As there is no proper implementation of BBMP building bye- laws, owners have built houses as per their whims and fancies. Many have compromised on the quality of construction materials and as years pass by the buildings weaken and pose serious threat to the lives of the people living in it and also those living in its vicinity, he added.
If the officials do not take prompt action, many of these old buildings would pose serious risk to residents in future, Murali warned.
