Hyderabad: Cops don hat of child rescuers

Rescued 36 minors from human trafficking racket at Yadadri by conducting raids.

Hyderabad: Three child marriages were averted every month in the Rachakonda commissionerate this year by SHE teams, statistics revealed.

According to Rachakonda commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat, the police has been conducting awareness programmes in villages and identifying families of girls who have completed Class X and are looking for matches for them.

Apart from illiteracy and poor economical conditions, parents who opt to marry off their minor children also worry that their daughter might fall in love or marry out of the caste, officials said, adding that as many as 46 child marriages were stopped in 2018.

SHE teams are working to prevent child marriages as well in addition to their regular duties, Mr Bhagwat said. “The voluntary organisation Child Rights Protection Force and volunteers are working in villages and collecting information about child marriages. SHE teams take necessary steps to prevent these and counsel parents of both the bride and bridegroom,” he said.

Anusha who was rescued from such a marriage represented the state in the interstate cricket tournament and was felicitated by the Rachakonda commissioner for her achievement.
