Cane workers eke out a living by making stars.

VIJAYAWADA: Christians celebrate Christmas worldwide. A special attraction for Christmas is the star. Every Christian hangs a star outside their houses and church. It has become a tradition in Andhra Pradesh. And Christians like to give gifts to the neighbors on the eve of Christmas. For the gifts, they choose verity of gift bags made with cane.

These Christmas stars, and gift Baskets feeding the cane workers in Vijayawada in the month of December. This business is running at Madhu Gardens, Giripuram, Rajarajeswaripet, Urvasi Inox, Fish market at one town, Satyanarayana Puram and Kandrika areas. The Stars made up of cane, plastic, electrical bulb and wire, costs from Rs 200 to Rs 5,000 according to the variety. The taste of the buyer is also reflected in the design as a star with exposing of light, and in the making of the Animals hut on demand.

Already the City glows in the stars mainly at the churches and the Christian areas. Electrical lighting glows in the night in many areas like Gunadala. “We made these stars and the baskets which attract everyone is with the special cane brought from Assam. Our Family totally works in this December. We sell many of varieties costs from 50 to 500 per Gift basket and the stars cost of 200 to 5000” said T.Elisha Giripuram.“ I am a cane worker, for four years I am making the Jesus Christ, Animal hut setting. This month gives us a financial boost” said Peeka Dany, Christ Rajapuram. For every festival celebrated in India is having a symbol. Like that the Star is the Symbol of the Christmas. So all of our people show interest to put a star on their houses, and it may do better for the family” said Mariyamma of Gunadala.
