TANVAS without Vice Chancellor, second time in 4 years
Chennai: Call it heights of poor administration, the prestigious Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Tanuvas) is now headless for the last two weeks and this is happening for the second time within a span of four years. The failure of the state in appointing the next vice chancellor has now led university registrar G.J. Hariskrishnan holding three important posts. Harikrishnan is also holding the in-charge post of vice chancellor and is the director of research department. Also, he has to take care of three departments and will be retiring this academic year.
According to confidential sources, the state has failed to promote the second rung academicians. The administration work will be adversely affected if the state delays the appointment of next vice chancellor. Further, the Pongal season is approaching and it is a happening period for agriculture and veterinary universities. Typically, new farm oriented programmes and exhibitions on livestock are usually organized, but this year there are no such visible functions planned as the varsity is now headless. The only respite is that the governor office has passed notification on December 8, recommending the three-member VC search panel, which is yet to convene, to shortlist the candidates, sources said.
When contacted, state official sources said the search panel committee has been formed with professor M.C. Varshneya, former VC, Kamadhenu University, Gujarat as the convenor. He is also the nominee appointed by chancellor (Governor Purohit Banwarilal). The other members are professor Rajavelu, former director, centre for animal health studies, Tanuvas and Dr. A Mahalinga Nainar, retired director of research, Tanuvas.
