346 vulnerable road points identified in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has identified 346 vulnerable points where the roads get damaged frequently during rains and estimated Rs 900 crore for relaying them.
Inadequate storm water system or improper road profile was seen as cause for their damage. GHMC categorised these roads as priority I and II and estimated an expenditure of Rs 900 crore for their re-carpeting, laying CC and white topping. The corporation sought financial assistance from the state governments for undertaking these works.
GHMC submitted a detailed report to the state government highlighting the need to take up preventive maintenance and periodic renewal of BT roads in its limit. For many years, it took up maintenance of damaged road stretches but not comprehensive road-laying with proper profile correction owing to financial constraints. Another obstacle was the proposed road cuttings by various agencies every year.
The state government formed Hyderabad Road Development Corporation (HRDCL) to take care of main roads of the Roads and Buildings (R&B) and the National Highways in the city area. HRDCL would take up white topping roads on these main corridors. GHMC proposed white topping on roads connecting the HRDCL and others where laying had been completed.
The whole project was estimated to cost Rs 906.08 crore and GHMC said as its engineering wing would be unable to complete all these works this fiscal. Under the GHMC prioritisation plans, the first part would need Rs 454.75 crore for which it sought special assistance from the state government to complete the works by March 31, 2018.
It wanted the government to give in-principle approval for Rs 452.13 crore in the 2018-19 budget to take up second phase which is expected to complete by July 2018.
