Post Vardah: Tangedco manages to meet peak power demand
Chennai: After Cyclone Vardah had caused such severe damage to the power infrastructure on December 12, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation was for the first time able to meet the city's peak power demand of over 2,000 mw indicating a return to normalcy.
When the devastating cyclone ravaged the city and its suburbs, the power infrastructure, including 54 high tension towers evacuating power from the generating stations to the source sub stations, it led to prolonged power outage.
The city remained without power supply for over 24 hours between December 12 and 13. On December 14, the city's energy consumption was a mere 15 million units and it went up to 20.62 MU next day. Peak demand for the city on December 16 was a mere 1,327 mw while the data for December 14 and 15 were not available.
Indicating the return of normalcy in power supply, the Tangedco was able to meet a peak demand of 2,091 mw on Thursday night and energy consumption of 39.62 MU. Average peak power demand for Chennai varies from 2,000 mw to 2,300 mw in the month of December.
With the help of 15,228 workers including workers from Andhra Pradesh, Tangedco was able to restore power to all the low tension consumers by December 20, a senior Tangedco official said.
