Karnataka minister assures survey, Diddalli stir halted
Mysuru: The 574 tribal families evicted from Diddalli in Kodagu district, gave up their protest on Friday after Social Welfare Minister, H Anjaneya ordered a joint survey by the forest and revenue departments to check if the village was part of a reserve forest area and consider their demands for housing sites and land to farm on.
The minister, who held a three hour long meeting with the tribal leaders, promised to discuss their demands with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
He later said the government had released Rs 1 crore to provide tarpaulins for building temporary sheds for the tribals and provide them them food and basic amenities at Diddalli for a month.
"As they do not want to move to other taluks, we are trying to identify land in Virajpet for them. We have both the money and the political will to help them. It is the duty of government to rehabilitate these tribals," he added.
Tribal leader, Muththamma, who created a sensation by her nude protest march on December 7, however warned that they would resume their protest in a month if their demands were not met and the agitation would be more aggressive next time.
