Dirty walls? Call GHMC; JNTU students to showcase skills
Hyderabad: You can now report dirty or defaced compound walls in your colony to the GHMC’s zonal office and receive a touch of fresh paint, and art, in return. According to a new plan, these spaces will be utilised by art students to showcase skills.
The corporation has tied up with the JNTU Fine Arts University to beautify city walls, corridors and bridges. The GHMC will pay for the painting material and students will use these walls as part of their annual projects.
The walls along the Somajiguda main road (opposite Raj Bhavan) M.S. Makta, Somajiguda flyover have been given a facelift by the students of the JNTU. This was done after the success of the International Street Art festival held recently along Necklace road.
GHMC commissioner, Dr B. Janardhan Reddy, said: “Deserted compound walls along important routes will be beautified in the first phase. Walls in residential colonies will be taken up after requests from residents. It should be a public property and not a private wall. Space will be allocated to each of the students and the theme of the painting will be based on their ideas. And those defacing these walls or public spaces will face punishment in the form of fines.”
He added: “From January 1, the GHMC will strictly implement the Defacement of Public and Private Properties Act. The instructions have been given to officials at the circle level.”
Additionally, there would be no more wall writings, hoardings, flexi boards, cut-outs of political leaders and banners in the city from January 1 as the GHMC’s rules have made them illegal.
