Chennai: The government veterinary hospital on Friday informed the Madras high court that the meat seized at the Egmore railway station on November 17 was mutton of sheep or goats.
The counsel appearing for the Government veterinary hospital in Vepery filed a report to this effect when the PIL filed by People for Cattle in India (PCI) came up for hearing before a division bench comprising Justices M.Sathyanarayanan and P.Rajamanickam.
The report stated that the huge quantity of meat seized was not that of dogs but was mutton of sheep or goats and the same was destroyed due to its unhygienic condition.
In its PIL, the PCI sought a direction to the state health department to scientifically dispose of the seized item alleged to be 2,100 kgs of dog meat, which arrived from Jodhpur in Rajasthan, without causing any damage to the environment and to appoint an advocate commissioner to inspect the same and also direct the Meat Science Department of the Madras Veterinary Hospital to submit a species report to the court.
Impleading Chennai Corporation as one of the parties, the bench posted to December 6, further hearing of the case.
