Kozhikode: Mahila Mall opens to shoppers today

The venture will provide jobs for 250 women directly and 500 women indirectly.

Kozhikode: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the Mahila Mall, owned and operated entirely by women, at Wayanad Road here on Saturday.

The mall, a Kudum-basree venture, is cla-imed to be the first of its kind in the country and is owned by Unity Women’s group, a Kudumbasree unit under the city corporation focusing on IT services for the last 14 years. All the 80 shops of the Mall were alr-eady sold out, according to Kudumbasree officials.

Coming up with more than 36,000 squ-are feet area, the project is executed with the support of District Kudumbasree Mission. The Mall will cater to talented women entrepreneurs who will get a space to showcase their talents in handicrafts, culinary, fashion designing, travel and tourism and many more, it was pointed out.

Apart from Kudumbasree workers and groups, women’s societies and private ent-repreneurs will get a space in the mall. 85 percent of the shops were owned by Kudu-mbasree groups while 15 percent by private women entrepreneurs and other women’s collectives.

With five floors, the 4th floor is for women related government offices and agencies while the rooftop is an open air food court. The venture will provide jobs for 250 women directly and 500 women indirectly.
