Kochi: Rs 44 crore central aid for dairy

Kochi: There is some good news for the flood-hit dairy farmers who suffered huge losses in the recent floods. The Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (MILMA)) Ernakulam region will pay additional Re 1 per litre of milk from December 1 in an effort to support hundreds of dairy farmers who suffered big losses in the floods.

Chairman of MILMA Ernakulam region P.T Balan Master told reporters here on Friday that the Union government has approved various projects worth Rs 44 crore submitted by the three regional unions for revival of the flood hit sector.

Mr Balan Master told reporters that providing Re 1 extra per litre, though not sufficient, will give relief to the badly hit farmers. Farmers in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kottayam and Idukki districts will get the benefit.

“In Ernakulam region, the Federation has distributed total of Rs.1.27 crore to 618 dairy farmers to purchase cattle. The compensation amount is Rs 10,000 for a farmer,” he said.

As part of observing National Milk Day, a programme will be conducted in Kochi on Monday. Minister K Raju will inaugurate the programme.
