Rs 33-crore sanctioned for Guntur inner ring road

Works remained a non-starter despite 12 years of granting it.

GUNTUR: The third phase works of the incomplete Mahatma Gandhi inner ring road in Guntur will begin following sanction of Rs 33 crore funds by the CRDA. This will resolve the traffic problems in reaching to the new Capital, Amaravati and to Guntur city. In 2005, the government sanctioned inner ring road but the construction was stopped after completion of two phases, from Autonagar to Amaravati in the first phase and Amaravati Road to Swarnabharati Nagar in the second phase.

The third phase of works, from the RTO office to Perecherla, connecting Pedapalakaluru, remained a non-starter, despite 12 years of sanction of works. The announcement of new Capital, Amaravati, and shifting of the Secretariat and headquarters of the government departments increased traffic in Guntur. Further, the migration of people to Guntur city from other areas in search of work also added to the traffic in the last three years.

The Guntur-Amaravati main road is the main means of transportation as it connects all areas in the city. The AP government already proposed Amaravati-Anantapur Greenfield Express Highway and the inner ring road is essential to connect Amaravati and Guntur, so the completion of third phase of road works is useful for Amaravati.

The locals of Adavitakkellapadu, ChinaPalakaluru and Perecharla are willing to part with their lands for the expansion of the road in the third phase of the project. Kadiyala Bharavi, a resident of China Palakaluru, said for the last two years, the project failed to progress despite consent by the locals as the CRDA did not show interest in it.

He sought swift completion of the third phase of works and urged the APCRDA to work for the development of Guntur city too. Guntur MP Galla Jayadev said that he held discussions with the APCRDA and GMC commissioners on expediting the Inner Ring Road Phase-3 works. The GMC submitted road development plan under the project to the APCRDA this week. "Once the proposed third phase of road works are complete, it will ease the traffic snarls in Guntur and people from Narasaraopeta, Sattenapalli, Anantapur and others will have direct access to Amaravati without going through Guntur city."
