Hyderabad: Senior parliamentarian T. Subbarami Reddy on Wednesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to honour the late Carnatic music legend Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna with the Bharat Ratna. Dr Subbarami Reddy said that after 2008, no musician or singer had been honoured with the Bharat Ratna and Balamuralikrishna, who passed away on Tuesday, deserved the honour.
He said Balamuralikrishna was on par with stalwart musicians like M.S. Subbalakshmi, Pandit Ravi Shankar and Lata Mangeshkar and should be honoured with the country’s highest civilian award. He said Balamurali-krishna has delighted millions of fans for more than four decades with over 18,000 performances and he has created a number of ragas.
