Bengaluru: A joint survey by the BBMP and Bescom identified around 7,500 houses and buildings that have not maintained the required distance from high-tension and low-tension power lines, violating the rules.
Owners of all the 7,500 structures have been issued notices and it is also being checked as to how these structures were given permission to come up near high-tension lines.
A senior Bescom officer said that till a few months ago, only 2,500 notices were issued, but now all the notices have been issued and the survey will continue across the city.
“We also crosschecked and found that the structures have come up several years after the high-tension lines were drawn.
The big question is how permission was given for construction and who gave the approvals for power connection to these buildings,” he said.
“A meeting will be called with the civic agency and the next step decided. But we will ensure that a decision is taken to modify these structures as they are prone to accidents,” he said.
The survey was conducted and notices were issued after several people came in contact with live wires and were electrocuted in recent months in the city.
The BBMP, which was also part of the survey, assured Bescom that action will be taken against the structure owners for violating the rule. “The civic agency is also at fault for giving permission without inspecting the place. Now, we will have to direct the owners to modify the structure to maintain distance from the power line,” said a BBMP official.
He also said that they will soon have a meeting with Bescom and decide on suitable action against violators.
