Salem: A 27-year-old person, who along with another daily wage worker was involved in erecting huge party flex banners to welcome the State Chief Minister, Edappadi k Palaniswami to participate in some functions here on Sunday, succumbed to injuries he suffered due to electrocution on Tuesday.
Police said that Rajavelu, 27, and his colleague, Manikandan, 20, were working to put up a scaffolding to help fix the mega-flex banners in Taramangalam area that day, suddenly dropped down unconscious with heavy injuries after they suffered an electric shock at the worksite.
Both the workers were rushed to the Salem Mohan Kumaramangalam government general hospital, where one of the critically injured workers, Rajavelu died this morning despite the best treatment given to him at the hospital.
However, on hearing about Rajavelu's death, his aggrieved relatives flocked to the GH mortuary and sat in dharna, refusing to accept his body. They alleged that it was the callousness of the contractor handling the banners installation during the Chief Minister's visit who was responsible for Rajavelu's death and demanded action against them, besides paying suitable compensation to the deceased family. Policemen then rushed to the spot and persuaded the agitating relatives to disperse, assuring that steps will be taken to pay due compensation to the victim's family.
