Thiruvananthapuram: Congress revamp on back burner

The AICC has asked KPCC president Mullapally Ramachan-dran to complete the organisational revamp by the first week of December.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Congress party revamp has been put on the back burner with the KPCC preparing to fight the Sabarimala issue and the solar scam. Also, the group leaders are trying to delay the revamp though Congress president Rahul Gandhi had wanted an end to group politics.

A section of Congress leaders had recently alleged that close to a dozen senior KPCC general secretaries had not bothered to attend local-level meetings. But they attend the meetings held at Indira Bhavan. A senior Congress MLA told DC that KPCC leadership had decided against convening the meetings of the existing committee to avoid controversies.

“Rahul Gandhi had sought a revamp of the organisation from the bottom level. But with the Sabarimala situation hotting up and senior leaders being implicated in the solar case again, we have decided to go ahead with the Sabarimala protests. But once the proposed massive rally concludes at Pathanamthitta on November 15, the priority is to kick off the organisational revamp,” he said.

It will be a herculean task for he Congress to confidently face the Lok Sabha elections with a set of weak KPCC general secretaries managing matters in the local DCCs. The AICC has asked KPCC president Mullapally Ramachan-dran to complete the organisational revamp by the first week of December. But more trouble is in store for him because there were only two groups in contention earlier, but now there are three KPCC working presidents - K. Sudhak-aran, M. I. Shanavas and Kodikunnil Suresh - rooting for their nominees.
