Must follow Sabarimala traditions: Dr D Veerendra Heggade

Besides such restrictions were in place in other pilgrim cities across the world.

Mangaluru: Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade on Tuesday observed that traditions that preserve the sanctity of religious institutions should be followed particularly in the context of women of menstrual age entering the temple in Sabarimala.

Dr Heggade, who invited the media to spell out details about inauguration of Manjusha Museum, said people should understand that traditions came into being for certain reasons. Besides such restrictions were in place in other pilgrim cities across the world.

“I feel Vratas are to train men to follow 'samyama' (restrain). Ayyappa Vratadharis have to observe certain things like 'Brahmacharya,' having bath thrice a day and control over food and lifestyle. The Maaladhari cannot consume food cooked by women, including his wife and sisters. Sabarimala is a Kshetra where 'Vrata,' has importance. Rather than asking what would happen if women enter the temple, it should be noted that there are possibilties of relaxation in the the principals of 'samyama," he said.

“I feel Vrata is followed to build character. The Upvas on Ekadashi and Navaratri guide devotees towards self control. Relaxation in 'Vrata,' in the name of equality could lead to problem in self control. If women entry is only out of devotion then they can offer pooja at their houses too," he added.
