No to plastics, ryots tell Kovai collector

The farmers urged the collector to impose a blanket ban on plastics.

COIMBATORE: Members of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) on weekly grievances day on Monday petitioned K Rajamani Coimbatore district collector stating that plastic which is used to wrap most commonly used fast moving consumer goods (FMCGs), after being used is discarded by the public in agricultural lands and in water bodies, thus, impacting agriculture and aquatic life. The farmers urged the collector to impose a blanket ban on plastics.

In another petition, contract sanitary workers of the Mettupalayam Municipality Corporation requested the district collector to ensure that they are paid daily wages as per the norms fixed by the government. “The agency which has employed us on contract had promised to pay us Rs 400 per working day. However, currently while the men are paid Rs 230, the women are paid Rs 190.” the petition said. One of the petitioners A Nagaraj after submitting petition said, “we have not reported to work for the last four days and we will continue our indefinite strike till we are paid wages as promised.”

Meanwhile, parents of three-year old Deepesh petitioned district collector requesting that action be taken against a private hospital for alleged medical negligence while operating upon their son.
