Kochi: Marital discord on rise among youth

The commission also expressed concerns over the increasing number of children who are unwilling to take care of their aged parents.

KOCHI: Cases of marital discord and familial issues among young couples are on the rise mainly due to ego and dishonor, observed Women's Commission chairperson M.C. Josephine. She was talking to media after attending a district-level adalat of the Commission at Ernakulam district collectorate on Monday.

"The young generation is unable to adjust with life partner or their family members and situations. Complexities are on the rise in man-woman relationship. Apart from the increasing rate of marriage breakups, socially unhealthy man-woman relationships are also on the rise," she observed.

According to the WC chief, ignorance of labour laws is a major reason for increasing rate of harassment at workplace. "Many women are still unaware of the functioning of internal complaints committee in their workplace. Hence, even minor complaints which can be resolved in such committees are submitted before the WC," said Ms. Josephine.

She stressed the need to constitute internal complaint committees in a democratic manner. "Though the committees should have social worker, police personnel and legal expert, it is not being followed," she said.

The commission also expressed concerns over the increasing number of children who are unwilling to take care of their aged parents.

The adalat considered 94 cases of which 16 have been settled. Eight grievances were forwarded to police authorities while counselling has been recommended in three cases. The adalat will continue on Tuesday.
