Bhopal: Man torches bike for being ‘challaned’

A purported video capturing the whole incident has gone viral in social media.

Bhopal: A youth in Indore set his motorcycle on fire when cops stopped him to issue a “challan” (fine receipt) for violating traffic rules, the police said on Monday. The incident took place in district headquarter town of Indore late on Sunday night. A purported video capturing the whole incident has gone viral in social media.

According to the police, a bike-borne youth in his late 20s was stopped at Pardeshipura in Indore city by traffic police to check documents of his vehicle. He had a brief argument with the traffic police when the latter decided to issue a “challan” to him for violating traffic rules.

“The youth suddenly set ablaze his bike and then fled the spot”, the police said. Onlookers were later seen confronting the traffic police for issuing the unidentified youth a “challan” in spite of the fact that the state government has recently announced not to enforce the amended Motor Vehicle Act in MP till the issue was settled with the Union government.

“The driver was found heavily drunk when the traffic police stopped him during a routine checking operation. He also lacked proper documents of his vehicle,” a police official said.
